Simmons, William

"During the renewal process, I gained tremendous confidence in myself as a professional actor who has the ability to succeed and thrive in regional theatre. My fellowship activities have opened up many doors to me professionally."

Bill traveled to Chelsea, Mich., to take a leading role in the world premier of Carey Crim's play Wake at the Purple Rose Theatre Company in spring of 2009, and later performing in Our Town in spring of 2010. "Wake proved to be a pivotal production in my development as a professional actor. Part of the joy of working as an actor at the Purple Rose is the extended rehearsal process that many regional theatres cannot afford." Bill also completed an intensive workshop, "Introduction to Stage Combat," at the Purple Rose Theatre in August 2010.

After his theatre experiences in Michigan, Bill traveled to New York to see Purple Rose Theatre Company founder Jeff Daniels in his Tony Award-nominated role in God of Carnage. He also spent time in Ann Arbor, Mich. and the Rocky Mountains in Colorado to seek inspiration and renewal. "As I have matured as an actor, I have recognized the value of time away from practicing my craft to the overall value of my emotional health. Travel allows me to let go of the intensity of rehearsals and performances and enjoy my family, friends and the larger world around me. My Creative Renewal experience has helped me give true value to my work as an actor."
