Sholly, James Anders

"I have been completely overhauled by this experience: reinvigorated, reorganized, revised and renewed."

James attended the AlGA (professional association for design) Make/Think conference in Memphis, Tenn., a three-day conference on the future of graphic design. "In Memphis, I was immersed in the current professional culture of graphic design. I have reflected on the concepts and ideas that I heard there many times. Additionally, I felt that I was part of the process that would help determine the future of my own profession."

For the second part of his fellowship, James traveled to Sweden and Germany where he explored a long-standing interest in design as it functions in the societies of those countries. In Sweden, he had the opportunity to meet Henrik Nygren, one of James' personal graphic design heroes. He also spent time exploring contemporary art and design and soaked up the local culture, including a stay in an ice hotel. In Hannover, Germany, James' relatives showed him the art and history of the city. "I was renewed by being reunited with family members that I haven't seen in many years and the new acquaintances that I made as a result of reconnecting with them. I also felt renewed by seeing parts of the world that I couldn't have ever imagined seeing before."
