"This fellowship has helped me to begin using architecture in my work and given me an interest in capturing some of the wonderful structures here in Indianapolis."
Emma took road trips to older cities and remote coastal towns, photographing and sketching points of interest along the way. She spent time in fourteen states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Animals, children and trees have figured prominently in Emma's artwork to date, and she wanted to use her fellowship to explore and incorporate architecture into her artwork.
Nature, buildings and cemeteries were of special interest to Emma in seeking artistic inspiration. "Although I had spent time in all but one of these states before, I had never sketched or taken notes, and I had never taken the time to apply the sites to my work." Emma is currently working on a children's literature/movie-themed gallery show.
