"The fellowship allowed me to think not just as a lighting designer, but as an artist."

Marti began her renewal experience in a convertible on Route 66 to Sante Fe, New Mexico to visit the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. "I was thrilled to begin a journey of looking at art and architecture in relation to how they are lit." A second trip to Washington D.C. afforded more opportunities to investigate art and architecture through light and to gather inspiration. She visited the Kennedy Center, the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials, and the National Museum for Women in the Arts. In a previously planned trip to New York City, Marti attended NYU masterclasses with Broadway lighting designer Jules Fisher and seven other Tony Award-winning lighting designers.

Marti's travels also included a trek through Europe, visiting Austria, Italy and Germany, hiking the Alps, photographing art in museums, castles, and galleries, and absorbing the art and architecture of the continent. "I returned from each of my travels with a better sense of how a stress-free environment can stimulate creativity and imagination. I am also using the numerous photos I took as reference points for researching future design choices."
