Public
Art
For
All

In the summer of 2021, local researchers did a street-by-street inventory of public art in Indianapolis/Marion County. Led by Rokh Research & Design Studio, this team traveled 6,500+ linear miles to catalog and map all artworks–memorials, murals, signs, monuments, and more–that are visible from the public right-of-way. They also assessed whether public art is truly accessible to all.

Rokh’s findings broaden our community’s definition of public art and help us better understand the gaps that underscore opportunities to create an inclusive public art landscape. We invite you to read the report and learn more about how you can advocate for equity in public art in Indianapolis.

OUR COMMITMENT: WHAT’S NEXT

By telling the stories and experiences of different communities, public art allows residents to express and exchange their values. The Public Art for All census is the first step in a comprehensive audit that will help the Arts Council and its partners ensure equitable investments in public art, artists, and communities.

We will accomplish this by:

  • Creating a more inclusive definition of public art.
  • Prioritizing funding for areas that have been identified as public art deserts.
  • Hosting community conversations about the value of public art.
  • Developing work that increases the visibility of artists and communities and uplifts under-represented stories.
  • Bringing awareness to all public art by including it in our Public Art Directory and empowering artists to add their own artworks.
  • Accurately documenting artists’ self-identities.
  • Responding to the maintenance needs of existing and new public art to improve community well-being.

Project Partners

Public Art for All, conducted and designed by Rokh, was produced in partnership with Indy Arts Council and Art Strategies LLC. Funding was provided by the City of Indianapolis Bicentennial Commission, the Herbert Simon Family Foundation, and the Central Indiana Community Foundation
